Sulfate Free Shampoo has sits detractors, most of them mainstream mass production manufacturers who recognize the threat to their old ways of making shampoo. They like the fact that sulphates cost practically nothing and they have their suppliers in place with a smooth money making machine selling 10 cent bottles of shampoo for $10 or more. They point to the cost of sulfate free shampoo as a prohibitive factor. This was more true ten years ago than today. Today, if you already buy professional quality hair products, you can buy a sulfate free shampoo for the same cost as a sulfate shampoo, and that should make you go “Huh?” It is true, sulphates are extremely cheap to buy, most harsh chemicals are, and sulphates are no different. Natural surfactants are not cheap, and therefore drive the manufacturing cost up, which is the primary reason mass production manufacturers resist making sulfate free shampoo. While these mass production manufacturers have been dragging their heels, smaller, independent manufacturers have been innovating and improving even more.
